Gothenburg University Information
Known in Swedish as Göteborgs universitet, Gothenburg university was established in 1891 as a public university. Today it has grown in size to become one of the largest universities in Europe, and offers a very broad range of degrees. The current rector of the university is Pam Fredman.
The Gothenburg university ranking is 86th in Europe. Other colleges and universities in Sweden include Karolinska Institute, Uppsala, Lund University, Stockholm University, Royal Institute of Technology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Linkoping University, Stockholm School of Economics Umeå universitet and Chalmers University of Technology.
There are five major faculties and schools at Gothenburg University, these cover Business, Economics and Law; Education; Fine Arts, Applied and Performing Arts; Humanities; Science; and Information technology. Additionally the university offers studies in medicine through its Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
Being a large university has enabled the university of Gothenburg to produce a distinguished list of Alumni and faculty; these include Arvid Carlsson, who won the nobel prize for medicine. Other notable people include the authors Åke Edwardson and Gunnar D Hansson; Jan Eliasson; Sture Allén; and Magnus Carlsson.
