Hokkaido is a leading university in Japan and therefore has many famous faculty and alumni associated with it, these include the authors Arishima Takeo and Nitobe Inazo, the composer Akira Ifukube, the biologist Ryuzo Yanagimachi, and the renowned computer scientist Hiroshi Ishii.
