The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) is an independent research university in India which focuses on the fields of management, technology and engineering.

The Indian Institute of Technology ranking is number 62 in Asia in the University Review List. Similarly ranked colleges include Kyungpook National University, Nagasaki University, Osaka City University, and Kumamoto University. Other renown Indian Colleges include Indian Institute of Science, and University of Calcutta.

Established in 1951, the institute is headed by Damodar Acharya and is ranked one of the top engineering institutions in India.

In 1946. efforts made by educationalists Jogendra Singh and Humayun Kabir to create post-war technical institutions in India to further the countries development were approved by the Chief Minister of West Bengal. A committee then voted in favor of the establishment of a higher technical institution in the country and so IIT was established and opened in August 1951 with 42 teachers and 224 students. The institute was then located in Esplanade East, Calcutta and most of the offices and classrooms were housed in the Hijili Detention camp.

Now the main campus of the university is located in Kharagpur and houses several academic buildings like the Takshashila complex and Vikramshila complex. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur now has 19 departments, 13 schools, and 8 multi-disciplinary schools. Aside from its collaborations and consultancy projects, the university has its own research center for earth sciences called the Center for Ocean, River, Atmosphere and Land Science, or CORAL.
