Medical University of Graz Information
The Medical University of Graz, or Leopold Auenbrugger Medizinische Universität Graz, was founded in 1863 as the Karl-Franzens-University in Graz’s faculty of medicine by Franz Joseph.
It was established as an official university in 2004, and became a separate entity from the original University of Graz.
The primary disciplines taught in the Medical University of Graz are Dentistry and Medicine. The university also grants baccalaureate degrees in Nursing Sciences as well as a doctoral degree in Medical Science. Aside from their regular offerings, they also run medicine related short-time/specialized programmes.
The Medical University of Graz has extended its borders through it’s international cooperation programme, which is under the guidance of the Department of International Relations. It has several service and information centers around the globe. In its goal to mobilize students and teaching staff, it has bilateral agreements with more than 50 universities from 18 countries under the Europe Erasmus agreements, as well as other exchange programs with educational institutions worldwide.
The Medical University of Graz has several institutes, including: the institute of Human Genetics, Physiological Chemistry, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Anatomy, Cell Biology, Histology and Embryology, Physiology, Pathology, Pathophysiology and Immunology, Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology, Hygiene, Forensic Medicine, Biophysics, Social Medicine, Medical Informatics, Statistics and Documentation and the Department for Biomedical Research.
The university’s different offerings are divided among these departments: the department of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Neurology, Medical Psychology and Psychotherapy, Neurosurgery, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Radiology, Paediatric Surgery, Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, Psychiatry, Urology, Trauma Surgery, Blood Group Serology and Transfusion Medicine, Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, Orthopaedics; Ear, Nose and Throat, and the University Dental School.
The Medical University of Graz has 40 clinical/non-clinical institutions, one of which is the Institute of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. Its non-clinical institutions include the Clinical Immunology and Jean Dausset Laboratory and the Gemeinsame Einrichtung Klinische Psychosomatik. It has maintained close association with the Gratz University Hospital, which houses some of the university programs.
