Michigan Technological University Information
Michigan Technological University, also known as MTU or Michigan Tech, is a public university in the US which was established in 1885 under the name Michigan Mining School.
It is located in Houghton, at the upper Michigan Peninsula.
The university was first established to give mining engineers in the state training in copper mine operations. When the university first opened it had four teachers and 23 students. It changed names from the Michigan College of Mines to Michigan College of Mining and Technology before it was finally renamed Michigan Technological University in 1964. Though the university’s engineering offerings still exist, it has greatly expanded in terms of programs and to date the university has 120 degree offerings.
The Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI is divided into the College of Engineering, Science and Arts, Business and Economics, Technology, and Forest Resources and Environmental Science.
The College of Engineering is the most popular, and over 50 percent of the university’s new enrollees take up an engineering degree, either in mechanical, geological, environmental, or electrical engineering; the college also offers a digital signal processing introductory course.
MTU’s School of Business and Economics offers degrees in economics, accounting, management, finance, marketing, management information systems, and operations and systems management, which are all accredited by the AACSB. Aside from its undergraduate offerings, it also has a one-year Tech MBA program which teaches technology management.
The college of Science and Arts features one of America’s biggest and most comprehensive communications programs. MTU’s School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science offers an excellent research program, as well as a PhD level degree program. Its School of Technology offers degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Networks and System Administration among others.
In terms of research, Michigan Technological University has several facilities and institution which focus on innovations in protein folding, biofuels, climate change, tree genomes and molecular transistors. Aside from its main campus in Houghton, it has facilities in Hancock, the Keweenaw Research Center, the Michigan Tech Research Institute, the Ford Forestry Center and Research Forest as well as a campus in India.
