Nara Institute of Science and Technology Information
The Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) is one of the only two Japanese national universities that cater solely to research and postgraduate studies. It is unique in its structure such that it is subject to less regulations and intervention by the Ministries of Education, Culture, Sports and Science as compared to regular universities and it encompasses a very limited number of disciplines. The NAIST ranking is around 19th to 23rd in Japan, and 508th to 568th in the world. Similarly rated colleges in Japan include University of Tokushima, Nihon University, Niigata University, and Kanazawa University.
The institute is located in the city of Ikoma in the Nara Prefecture.
NAIST was established in 1991 with the aim of promoting high-level research in advanced science & technology and developing international research leaders. Their main target students were accomplished individuals who were already active either in academia or industry. During the Nara Institute of Science and Technology establishment, it was solely made up of the Graduate School of Information Science. The Graduate School of Biological Sciences was established a year later(1992) and the Graduate School of Materials Science was established five years later(1996).
NAIST is composed of only three graduate colleges, each encompassing one or more departments.
The Graduate School of Information Science is comprised of the Department of Information Processing, Department of Information Systems and Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics.
The Graduate School of Biological Science is comprised of the Department of Cell Biology and the Department of Molecular Biology. The smallest college, the College of Materials Science, only has one department: Department of Materials Science.
Nara Institute of Science and Technology houses a number of institutions designed to cater to research as well as its students. These include the University Library (Digital Library), Information Technology Center, Research and Education Center for Materials Science, Research and Education Center for Genetic Information, Industry-Government-Academia Collaboration Group, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, Intellectual Property Division, Innovation Center, Health Care Center and Academic Exchange House “Guesthouse Sentan”.
Several professors, students and researchers in the Nara Institute of Science and Technology have received various distinctions and awards in science and technology. In 2006, people affiliated with the school have received the Molecular Biology Society of Japan 4th Mitsubishi Chemical Incentive Award, the Botanical Society of Japan 2006 Incentive Award, Best Research Paper Award, and the Research Incentive Award, among others.
