National Cheng Kung University Information
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) was founded in 1931 during the Japanese rule of the area. The initial name was Tainan Technical College. After the Japanese rule, the college was then named Taiwan Provincial Tainan Junior College of Technology, then later Taiwan Provincial College of Engineering School.
The National Cheng Kung University ranking is number 27 in Asia in the University Review List. Similarly ranked colleges include Nanjing University, HKPU, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the Pohang University of Science and Technology.
Other Taiwanese colleges include National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, National Yang Ming University and the National Chiao Tung University.
NCKU Taiwan consists of six departments namely: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electro-Chemistry, Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering. Further departments were added over the years including: Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, Management, Planning and Design and Medicine.
National Cheng Kung University has a high reputation within these departments and that is why it is considered as one of the most prestigious universities in Taiwan. In addition, National Cheng Kung University usually ranks second or third amongst all universities in Taiwan. According to a survey, most Taiwan companies preferred graduates of this university to work for them.
The university currently has nine colleges devoted to Planning and Design, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Social Science, Engineering (established since 1931), Liberal Arts, Management, Sciences, Medicine, and Bioscience and Biotechnology.
The university also offers Program of Bachelors, Center for General Education and Progressive Education. In addition, the university has Research Centers such as Center for Bioscience and Biotechnology, Sustainable Environment Research Center, Cardiovascular Research Center.
There are many notable alumni from National Cheng Kung University. One of which is currently the Vice President of Science and Technology at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York. He is Tze-Chiang Chen who read for a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in Physics at NCKU. Another famous alumni of this university is C.Y. Lee, an amazing architect. He directed the design of Taipei 101, one of the worlds tallest buildings. Other notable alumni includes Wu Po-hsiung, former mayor of Taipei, Yi-Bing Lin, and Lin Hsin-I, Chairman of ITRI.
