Peking University Information
The Times ranks Peking University (北京大学) as the best in Asia and the 36th best in the world. This is high accolade for a university from the fastly emerging economically country of China, especially as it is faced with competition from well funded Japanese and Korean universities.
The Peking University ranking is number 18 in Asia in the University Review List. Similarly ranked colleges include University of Hong Kong, KAIST, Nanyang Technological University, and Yonsei University.
Other good Chinese education establishments include University of Science and Technology of China, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Jilin University and the Tsing Hua University.
Peking University is situated in the Chinese capital of Beijing, and is named after the old name for the city. The university was established at the end of the 19th century, making it the second oldest university in China.
Peking University has thirty different colleges, and a further twelve departments; this enables the university to offer a large range of subjects for its students to study; indeed there are 95 degree options available at undergraduate level, nearly 200 at masters level and around 170 at PhD level. Some of the subjects in which Peking university is especially strong are teaching, social sciences, pure science, applied science, humanities, and engineering.
