Stockholm School of Economics Information
The Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) is a leading private business academic institution located in the northern part of Europe. Accredited by the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) which attests the highest quality in all its core activities such as research and instruction, it has comprehensive offerings in Executive Education MBA as well as undergraduate, master’s and doctorate degree programs. The curriculum it offers in Masters in Management is placed no. 1 in Northern Europe and clinched the 12th rank in the entire of Europe. The school is also an affiliate of CEMS (The Global Alliance in Management Education).
It was established in 1909 through private efforts following a generous contribution sponsored by Knut Agathon Wallenberg in 1903 and other business leaders such as Olof A. Söderberg and Joseph Nachmanson. Being established as a business institute, the Stockholm School of Economics course offering in economics has stood out outstandingly in the areas of research and educational curriculum since its founding.
Other Swedish universities include Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Linkoping University and Uppsala University.
The school is commonly named as Handelshögskolan i Stockholm. Handelshögskola, which almost means “college of commerce” is the same as the term Handelshochschule, a German word adapted in 1898 by schools in Germany beginning with the school, Handelshochschule Leipzig. The word högskola was also used during this period to categorize specialized higher academic institutions separate from universities, one of which was the Royal Institute of Technology, (Kungliga) Tekniska högskolan, which adapted its name since 1877.
Currently, the Stockholm School of Economics offers the following courses, namely, an undergraduate program in Business & Economics, generally focused on retail management; two masters programs namely, Business and Economics with fields in Accounting & Financial Management, Economics, Finance, Management and Marketing & Media Management; and General Management; and a doctorate program with specialized disciplines in Business Administration, Economics and Finance.
The SSE claims the following prominent figures as members and scholars: the economist Eli Heckscher, an Economics and Statistics Professor from 1909–1929, and Economic History Professor from 1929–1945, and a recognized proponent of economic history as an independent academic discipline; Gunnar Myrdal, an economist and recipient in 1974 of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences together with Friedrich Hayek, an Austrian economist; Bertil Ohlin, also an economist and awardee of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1977 which he shared with British economist James Meade; Gustav Cassel, a Stockholm University professor who was a proponent of standard economic theory of Purchasing power parity; and economist Dag Hammarskjöld, United Nations General Secretary in New York City, USA. The Stockholm School of Economics is currently steered by its Rector, Prof. Lars Bergman.
