University of Haifa Information
The University of Haifa is a public university in Haifa, one of the largest cities in Israel. It was created to provide first-rate education to the various sectors of the Israeli community.
Other well ranked colleges and universities in Israel include Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University, Technion Israel Institute of Technology, Bar-Ilan University, Weizmann Institute of Science and Ben Gurion University. Similarly ranked universities include the University of Lisbon, Tokushima University and the University of Bremen.
The university has long been known as an advocate for the cooperation and understanding between Arabs and Jews.
The university was founded in 1963 through the joint efforts of the Haifa Municipality and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. It enrolled 472 students during its first year and offered courses in Social Sciences and Humanities through the Departments of Biblical Studies, Jewish History, Hebrew Literature and Language, French Literature and Language, General History, Political Science, Sociology, Geography, Arabic Literature and Language and English Literature and Language.
The university held its first graduation in 1967. It received its academic accreditation from the Council for Higher Education in 1972, thereby gaining independence as an institution.
The University of Haifa was originally situated in Erdstein House in Haifa’s Hadar HaCarmel section. It later moved to Merkaz HaCarmel, where the Municipal High School No. 5 is currently situated. It moved to its present location, Mount Carmel, in 1966.
The university offers hundreds of undergraduate and graduate courses that are taught in Hebrew or in English. It has seven faculties: Faculty of Education, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science & Science Education, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Sciences.
The University of Haifa also has two schools: Graduate School of Management and Leon H.Charney School of Marine Sciences. There is a separate Physical Education Department and several institutes, research centers and other small independent institutions.
The University of Haifa is a well-known research university and is partnered with several private and public corporations. Some of the research facilities in the university include Herzl Institute for the Study of Zionism and Israel; The Jewish-Arab Center; Study of Crime, Law, and Society; Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Emotions; Study of Pilgrimage, Tourism and Recreation; International Brain and Behavior Research Center; Center for Law and Technology; Center for Democratic Studies; Center for National Security Studies and Geostrategy; and Center for Research of Education for Peace.
Some of the University of Haifa notable alumni include politician Assad Assad, Mossad Director Meir Dagan, actor Ashraf Barhom, Maccabi Haifa President Yochanan Vollach, and GOC Army Headquarters Commander Benjamin Gantz, among others.
