University of Bradford Information
The University of Bradford is a university in the UK established in 1957 under the name Bradford Institute of Technology. In 1973, it became the first British University to offer programs in Peace Studies. In the Good University Guide 2008 by The Times, the university garnered the 48th spot amongst the country’s best universities. The University of Bradford ranking number is 91 in the University Review best UK universities list. Similarly ranked colleges in the UK include Swansea University, Queens University Belfast, University of Worcester, Buckinghamshire New University, and The Open University. World universities with similar rank include Hacettepe University, Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 University, and University of Louisville.
Before it became a technology institute, the university was first known as the Bradford Schools of Weaving, Design, and Building. It was formally established as a technological institute after it offered several courses in higher education. Several buildings, like the Richmond, Horton and Chesham building were put up beginning 1963. In 1966, the university was renamed the University of Bradford with the granting of the Charter of Incorporation. Harold Wilson, then Prime Minister, was elected as its first chancellor.
During the 1980’s the main campus expanded with new buildings like the Communal Building, Library and Computer Center, Ashfield Building and Pemberton Building.
The university has seven schools: School of Engineering, Design and Technology, School of Health Studies, School of Computing, Informatics and Media, School of Life Sciences, School of Management, School of Social and International Studies, and the School of Lifelong Education and Development.
The school of engineering is further divided into several departments: Mechanical Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Industrial Studies. Aside from its regular programmes, the school also offers research opportunities in polymers, automotive engineering, advanced materials engineering and telecommunications.
The school of Health Studies offers courses in physiotherapy, nursing, occupational therapy, radiography and midwifery. It also offers, on a part time basis, courses in drug therapy and care of dementia.
The school of Computing, Informatics and Media has departments in Computing, Mathematics, Creative Technology as well as the Bradford Media School. The school has more than 40 undergraduate offerings such as degrees in media technology, animation and computer games.
The school of Life Sciences is the largest school in the university and offers many undergraduate courses in the fields of Archaeological, Geographical and Environmental Sciences; Chemical and Forensic Sciences Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Pharmacy, and Optometry.
The school of Management at the University of Bradford offers undergraduate courses in accountancy, management, finance, marketing and business. Also, it has several masters and doctoral level programs as well as a degree in Law.
Lifelong Education and Development focuses on short-time specialist courses in social studies and community regeneration.
