The University of Giessen’s full name comes from modern agricultural chemistry founder Justus Liebig, who is the university’s most renowned faculty member.
The university’s foundation in 1607 answered the call for a Lutherian university in Gießen, after all existing universities in the area reformed to Calvinism. A charter issued in the same year by Kaiser Rudolf II gave way for the university to continue providing quality education to bureaucrats and priests. The university closed its doors to students during the Thirty Years War but became active again in 1650 after peace was restored in the area. The university followed the same traditions and teachings throughout the years until the 20th century, when it began to branch out and embrace advancements in technology. During this period, the university library was moved to its own building and more clinics for human and Veterinary medicine were added to the university’s list of institutions. More buildings were soon to follow, including the Faculty of Chemistry building and the university’s cultural center. The university acquire the status of public university in 1929, after the reunification of the Hessian states.

The university does not have an official campus per se, just a defined group of buildings and establishments adjacent to one another throughout the city of Giessen.
