The University of Groningin (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) is the second oldest university in the netherlands having been established in 1614 by the Regional Assembly of city of Groningen. It is presently presided over by Professor Dr. Frans Zwarts.

The university has 9 faculties, enabling it to teach 61 degrees at undergraduate level and 116 at masters. It also has around 650 PhD candidates. Some of the greatest strength of the university of Groningen are in the subjects of Astronomy, Chemistry, Ecology, and Material Sciences; in these subjects it is amongst the best in Europe. In addition to offering courses taught in dutch, the university also offers 5 degrees taught in English.
