The University of Konstanz (Universität Konstanz) is a public German university founded in 1966. Similarly rated German colleges include University of Halle-Wittenberg, University of Jena, Universität Konstanz, and University of Regensburg.
Its main campus, located in Gießberg, was established in 1972. The University is recognised as one of the country’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning. It joined and succeeded in the national competition known as the Excellence Initiative in 2007, making it the youngest and smallest University of Excellence in the country. It is very well-known for being a research university.
The University of Konstanz founding committee, in 1965, developed a concept to create a reform university which has a central administration, new forms of teaching and study, and facilities for computers, language training and technology. Traditional university structures were replaced by new forms of self-administration, expressed through the establishment of a free-access, central library.
The Universität Konstanz started to operate in 1966 in a wing of a former Dominican monastery, which is now the Inselhotel. It had a few dozen students and few professors. The development of the current campus started in 1967 with several construction projects on Gießberg, a hill. Since its beginning, the architectural designs of the buildings in the University were conceptualised to reflect its new forms of teaching and research. The architectural concept favoured short paths, dense construction, and many seminar rooms instead of large auditoriums. Structural expansions and alterations are still being carried out in the University today.
There are three faculties at the Universität Konstanz: Sciences; Humanities; and Law, Politics and Economics. The Faculty of Sciences is comprised of the departments of Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer and Information Science, and Mathematics and Statistics. The Faculty of Humanities is divided into the departments of Linguistics, Art and Media Studies, Literature Science, Sports Science, Educating Science, Sociology, History and Philosophy. The Faculty of Law, Economics and Politics is composed of th departments of Politics and Management, Economics, and Law.
