University of Palermo Information
The University of Palermo, or the Università degli Studi di Palermo is a state-supported university in Palermo, Italy established in 1806. Even before it was turned into a university, it was already an Academy of Studies run by Jesuit priests since 1498, where priests taught law and medicine. The Jesuits were expelled in 1767 under King Ferdinand I only to return 37 years later.
This time, King Ferdinand I allowed them to run the Accademia and it was officially established as a university a few years later. In 1860, Italy’s unification led to the modernization of the university under the initiative of Stanislao Cannizzaro, a chemist, and Michele Amari, a minister and Arab Studies specialist. The University’s main building was built in 1307 and is one of Palermo’s most renowned historical sights. The building, called Palazzo Steri, is the Chiaramonte’s former residence and currently houses the office of the Rector. Many religious historic buildings in Palermo were forfeited and turned over to the university as it expanded.
Aside from its regular academic programs, all disciplines in the University of Palermo have strong research activities. Also, the university has expanded in recent years to accommodate its international cooperation programmes.
The University of Palermo is divided into 12 faculties, namely the Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Physics, and the Faculty of Political Sciences.
