University of Surrey Information
The University of Surrey is located in South England within the county town of Guildford, Surrey. The University of Surrey ranking is 12th in the University Review best UK university list. Similarly ranked colleges include ICL, Exeter, Bath, and Glasgow.
The institution gained its license on 9 September 1966 and was formerly established near South-West London’s Battersea Park. The institution was formerly called the Battersea College of Technology before it gained it’s university status. It was originally established in 1891 having been known then as the Battersea Polytechnic Institute. One of the main aims of the original university was to create and provide a good higher education experience for the poorer inhabitants of London.
The University of Surrey conducts extensive research, and is especially renowned for work on small satellites; it is a member of the 1994 group. It also has a large number of staff and nine of its departments were awarded five ratings in the Research Assessment Exercise 2001. The university recently extended its arms into China when it launched the Surrey International Institute in cooperation with Dongbei University of Finance and Economics.
The main campus of the University of Surrey is located adjacent to Guildford Cathedral and close to the center of Guildford. Manor Park, a second campus, is located a short distance away, having been developed for the expansion of the existing academic buildings, student and staff accommodation and sporting facilities.
The University of Surrey ranked as the 20th top universities in the United Kingdom by The Guardian League Table 2011 and was ranked by The Times Good University Guide 2011 in the 32nd position.
The institution is offering a wide array of top ranking postgraduate and undergraduate degree programs. It also gained a name as one of the leading research universities with a global reputation for academic excellence in UK.
Indeed 88% of the University of Surrey ranking research was claimed to be internationally recognized and of world class value, as stated by the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, 2008).
The university offers its students modern facilities, cutting edge lecture theatres, science and computer laboratories, teaching rooms, post-office, bookshop, library, bank launderette, convenience store and food and drink outlets. It has sufficient accommodation for international students on both campuses. Extracurricular activities are also offered by the University of Surrey and there are over 50 clubs and societies, run for and by the students.
