University of the Mediterranean Information

The University of the Mediterranean Aix-Marseille II (Université de la Méditerranée), or simply the University of the Mediterranean, is a public French university under the Academy of Aix and Marseille. It is among the four universities governed by the said academy.

The name of the University is relatively new, as it was adapted only in 1994. Its official establishment was on 22 May 1969. Originally, the University was one of two universities which became autonomous after the Université d’Aix-en-Provence was dissolved in 1791. The Université d’Aix-en-Provence was created by Louis II de Provence in 1413. Its dissolution in 1791 was part of a larger scheme which dissolved all the universities in the country. In the same year the faculties were scattered between the cities of Marseille and Aix-en-Provence. Later, the two separate groups of faculties became autonomous.

Similarly ranked French universities include University Lyon 1, College de France and the Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 University.

A decree issued by the city council, or conseil municipal, opened the medical school at the palais du Pharo near the Vieux Port, Marseille on 21 April 1881. In 1969, almost two centuries later, two universities–Aix-Marseille I and Aix-Marseille II–were established between Marseille and Aix-en-Provence. Aix-Marseille II, in 1994, adapted the name Université de la Méditerranée, or the University of the Mediterranean.
