The University of Trieste (Università degli Studi di Trieste), often abbreviated to UNITS is an 88 year old institution having been founded in 1924.
It is a medium-sized university and is located in Trieste in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. Although it is one of the relatively young Italian Universities, it boasts a wide and almost complete array of university programs, with it being composed of 12 faculties and having approximately 24,000 enrolled students.
UNITS main campus was developed around the primary building in Piazzale Europa, which houses the Rector’s office, the main library, the administration offices and the faculties of Law and Political Science.
The buildings of the faculties of Pharmacy, Economics, Engineering, Natural Sciences, the Medical Institute of Microbiology and Physiology; the Data Processing Centre; the towing tank; and the building that accommodates the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Macromolecular Chemistry and the Department of Chemical Sciences; are also located inside the main campus. Furthermore the three students’ hostels and the university canteen, which are run by Regional Organization for the Right to University Study (Ente Regionale per il Diritto allo studio – ERDISU) are also found within the premises of the university.
Near the main campus, the grounds of the former psychiatric hospital are occupied by the Department of Earth Sciences and the Department of Geological Sciences, consisting of a number of small buildings immersed in the lush vegetation of Mount Valerio.
The University of Trieste is divided into 12 faculties namely the Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Humanities and Philosophy, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Political Sciences, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Psychology, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and the Advanced School of Modern Languages for Interpreters and Translators.
Luisa Accati, a known Italian historian, anthropologist and feminist public intellectual; Václav Bělohradský, one of the most famous contemporary Czech philosophers and sociologists; and Demetrio Volcic, an Italian journalist, author, and politician of Slovenian descent; are few of the most renowned faculties of the University of Trieste.
The University of Trieste takes pride of several notable alumni such as Darko Bratina, an Italian sociologist, film theorist and politician of Slovene ethnicity who had served as member of the Italian Senate; Alberto Conti, an astrophysicist at the Space Telescope Science Institute and one of the creators of the GoogleSky concept; and Albert O. Hirschman, an influential economist.
