University of York Information
This university was one of the new universities that were established by the government in the 1960’s; like the University of Warwick, York has grown in stature to become one of the best universities in the United Kingdom.
It is often ranked as one of the best five or six universities in England. Since its creation the university has grown to cover over 200 acres in the historic city of York in Northern England. The university of York is a collegiate university; it has eight colleges that are loosely based on the system of the older Cambridge and Oxford colleges. The University of York ranking is number 17 in the University Review List of best UK universities. Similarly ranked colleges include University of Glasgow, University of Edinburgh, University of Bristol, and University of Leicester.
The University of York is proud of its teaching standards and 20 of its 23 departments are rated as having excellent teaching in government assessments.
The Departments at the university offer study in the following core subject areas: History, Archaeology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Pure and applied Mathematics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Education, Nursing, Community based Clinical Subjects, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Social Policy and Administration, Politics and International Studies, Economics and Econometrics, Environmental Sciences, Music, Philosophy, English Language and Literature, and Linguistics.
Despite being a relatively young academic establishment the University of York has many renown alumni and faculty, these include the comedian Harry Enfield; authors Graham Swift, Myrna Combellack, and Anthony Horowitz; politicians such as Fabian Hamilton, Greg Mulholland and Han Seung-soo; and composers such as Jonty Harrison, Dominic Muldowney, and Gordon McPherson. I am also an alumni of the university of York.
