Zhejiang University Information

Zhejiang University (浙江大學 – Zhèjiāng Dàxué), originally named as “Qiushi Shuyuan” (Qiushi Academy), is one of the ancient and most renowned educational institutions in China. It sprawls through 518 hectares of land with a floor area of more than 2,000,000 square meters. Boasting five university sites within its perimeter, namely, Zhijiang, Yuquan, Xixi, Zijingang, and Huajiachi, it is an idyllic site of learning set amidst enjoyable atmosphere, portrait-like scenarios and a positive academic ambience.

The Zhejiang University ranking is number 24 in Asia in the University Review List. Similarly ranked colleges include Keio University, USTC, Nanjing University, and HKPU.

The Zhejiang University’s roots can be traced in 1897, when Lin Qi, mayor of Hangzhou, established the school, after equipping himself with western philosophies of learning. In 1902, its name was changed to Zheijing Academy and the following year, was made into Zhejiang Advanced College. In 1928, it became Chekiang University, after other industrial and agricultural schools and colleges merged into it.

The Sino-Japanese war era, from 1937-1949, was an opportune time for the University to rise into heights of prominence. It was acclaimed as one among the top 3 school institutions in the Republic of China and was commended as among the four most distinguished universities.

The post-war period showed the university diversified into several single-discipline schools. In 1998, Zhejiang University rose as a product of four prominent universities—the Zhejiang University, Zhejiang Agricultural University, Zhejiang Medical University and Hangzhou Univesity.

Today, the Zheijiang University pool of faculty boasts of 13 affiliates of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 13 affiliates of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 38 teaching professionals from “Cheung Kong Scholar’s Program,” 52 Members of State Excellence Youth Science Foundation, 17 winners of MOE Excellent Young College Teacher Prize, 59 Fellows of MOE Transcentury Excellent Scholar Training Program, 1225 fully-qualified Professors and 2417 Associate Professors.
