Flinders University Information
Flinders University, also known as the Flinders University of South Australia, is an Australian public university established in 1966. The Flinders University ranking is number 10 in Australia, and between 316th to 324th in the world. Similarly rated Australian colleges include University of Adelaide, University of Newcastle, Macquarie University, and University of Tasmania.
The university’s name is derived from Matthew Flinders, a navigator who explored the coastline of South Australia in the 19th century. The university is known for its leading research facilities and its advocacy for innovation.
Flinders University was among the many educational institutions created throughout Australia in the country’s efforts in expanding its educational facilities to give more people access to university-level education. It opened its doors to the public on the 25th of March, 1966 with a staff of 90 serving 400 students spread out over the university’s 10 initial courses.
Its main campus is built on the Adelaide plains on land formerly owned by the Kaurna people. From its original territory of 370 acres, the university expanded mainly through acquisition of other schools. In 1991, the South Australian College of Advanced Education’s Sturt campus was acquired by the university. Major renovations were made from 1992 to 1996, such as the extension of the library, the construction of the Engineering, Law/Commerce and Information Science and Technology buildings, and the opening of the Indigenous Higher Education Centre, which was housed in Yunggorendi Mande.
Flinders University’s partnership with the South Australian Government resulted in the opening of The Australian Science and Mathematics School in 2003.
At present, the university has over 160 undergraduate and graduate courses spread through its four faculties: the Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Education, Humanities, Law and Theology, Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Aside from its normal educational offerings, the university also offers several research opportunities for all disciplines.
In over four decades, the university has become known as a premiere research institution. In its commitment to innovative research, the Flinders University regularly invests in its ’17 areas of research focus’. It’s research activities have earnt the university millions in research grants and contracts with the government and industry.
