Graduate University for Advanced Studies Japan Information
The Graduate University for Advanced Studies Japan, otherwise known as Sōkendai, is a national university in Japan.
It is located in Hayama, Kanagawa prefecture, and was established in the year 1988.
The University came to be as a result of a law in May 1988 which called for the establishment of a Graduate University for Advanced Studies. In October 1988, the university was formally inaugurated as part of the Nagatsuda campus of the Tokyo Institute of Technology. The university started out with eight departments and two schools and was then headed by Dr. Saburo Nagakura. The university’s different departments included the Department of Statistical Science, Accelerator Science, Synchrotron Radiation Science, Structural Molecular Science, Functional Molecular Science, Genetics, Molecular Biomechanics and Physiological Science while its schools included the Schools for Mathematical and Physical Science; and Life Science.
Since then, the University has added several schools and departments to its institution and now has 22 departments divided among its six schools. Sokendai’s current lineup of schools include the School of Cultural and Social Studies, School of Physical Sciences, School of High Energy Accelerator Science, School of Multidisciplinary Sciences, School of Life Science, and School of Advanced Sciences.
Under its School of Cultural and Social Studies are the Departments of Regional Studies, Comparative Studies, Japanese Studies, Japanese History, Cyber Society and Culture, and Japanese Literature. The Graduate University for Advanced Studies School of Physical Sciences house the Departments of Structural Molecular Science, Functional Molecular Science, Astronomical Science, Fusion Science, and Space and Astronautical Science. The School of High Energy Accelerator Science encompasses the Departments of Accelerator Science, Materials Structure Science, and Particle and Nuclear Physics. The Departments of Statistical Science, Polar Science, and Informatics all belong to the School of Multidisciplinary Sciences, while the Departments of Genetics, Basic Biology, and Physiological Sciences are in the School of Life Sciences. Lastly, the School of Advanced Sciences includes the Departments of Evolutionary Studies of Biosystems, and Biosystems Science.
To help its students in becoming competitive in their chosen fields, the Graduate University for Advanced Studies has set up several partnerships and parent institutes for their different departments. These include their various research facilities like Center of ICT and Distance Education, National Institutes for Fusion Science, Polar Research, Informatics, Genetics, Physiological Sciences and Basic Biology, plus Institutes of Statistical Mathematics, Particle and Nuclear Studies and Materials Structure Science.
