Hanyang University Information
Hanyang University is a private academic institution of higher learning in South Korea.
Founded in 1939, it is currently headed by its president Kim Chong-yang and is one of the most prestigious universities in Seoul.
Hanyang University, then called Dong-A Engineering Institute was established in 1939 when Korea was still under Japanese occupation. The university was founded so that the country could produce more technicians and engineers to prepare for the country’s independence from Japan. After Korea gained its independence in 1948, the university was finally accredited as a four-year engineering college, the first in Korea.
Currently, Hanyang University has two campuses, one in Seoul and the other one in Ansan, which is commonly called the ERICA campus, short for Education Research Industry Cluster at Ansan. Colleges housed at the Seoul campus include the Colleges of Engineering, Medicine, Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Law, Economics & Finance, Business Administration, Education, Human Ecology, Music, Physical Education, Art, International Studies, and General Studies.
Colleges housed at the ERICA campus include the Colleges of Engineering Sciences, Languages & Cultures, Communication & Social Sciences, Science and Technology, Economics & Business Administration, Human Movement Sciences, Design and General Studies. As for its postgraduate offerings, the university offers several degrees in the fields of Urban and International Studies, Engineering, Business Administration, Public Administration, Education, Journalism and Mass Education, International Tourism, and Information and Clinical Nursing.
Aside from its 92 departments spread out over its many colleges, the Hanyang University also has 15 postgraduate schools, 43 research centers and 2 university hospitals. The university’s many research institutes include the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute, Gyeonggi Technopark, LG Innotek, and the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, all of which are located in Ansan. The university also has several sister schools in China, France, Germany, Japan and India among others, and often conducts international exchanges with many schools.
The university has produced several talented Engineers who now head multinational companies like Samsung, LG and Hyundai Motors. Notable graduates include LG Vice-chairmen Lee Sang-wan, Kim Kwang-ho and Yoon Boo-Geun. The university also has graduates known for their contributions in the movie and TV industry like Kang Dong-won, Lee Young-ae and Kim Hyo-jin.

The university’s Seoul campus is located at 17 Haengdang-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, while its Ansan campus is located at 1271 Sa-3 dong, Sangrok-gu, Ansan, Kyeonggi-do.
