The UConn Health Center was founded in 1961 with a mission to provide outstanding health care education in the state and in the country in general. Construction of the main campus started in 1966 at a prominent hilltop in Farmington. The main building, a massive circular structure, originally contained approximately 1.2 million square feet, 2,000 classrooms and seven miles of corridor. In 1994, the Andrew J. Canzonnetti, MD Building became the first major addition, adding 94,000 square feet. Another major addition was the 11-story state-of-the-art Academic Research Building which opened in 1999. The last and most recent addition was the four-storey Medical Arts and Research Building which opened in 2005.
The UConn Health Center houses a number of medical facilities including the John Dempsey Hospital. It also houses the schools of Dentistry, Medicine, and the graduate school of biomedical science of the University of Connecticut. The US News and World Report ranked UConn’s School of Medicine as second among the public schools in New England and third in primary care. Students serve their clinical years in various medical institutions including the John Dempsey Hospital, the Hartford Hospital, the Children’s Medical Center and the Saint Francis Hospital & Medical Center.
Another important part of the Health Center is the Lyman Maynard Stowe Library, which can be found in the Health Center’s academic wing. From 1999-2001, the library had been one of the eight National Network of Libraries of Medicine libraries which were funded by the US government. Now, the library uses an electronic funds transfer system which allows it to support payments between numerous medical libraries worldwide.
