The University of Greifswald is the 4th oldest university in Germany, and one of the oldest universities of the world.

It was established on October 17, 1456 though the teaching there can be traced back further still and has existed since 1436. The university catered to national and international appeal with approximately two thirds of the 12,000 students is outside of the state. The University of Greifswald ranking is as the joint 33rd in Germany, and joint 508th in the world. Similarly rated German colleges include Universität Bremen, University of Giessen, University of Ulm, and University of Bayreuth. Greifswald is Germany’s youngest city according to a study in 2008. It is often depicted as a university with a town built around it rather than a town with a university. This is due to its small town atmosphere, the architectural position of the school, and young, academic panache in the streets.

After the Second World War, universität greifswald was re-opened and more faculties were established. Currently, the University has 5 basic faculties: theological, law and economics, medical, philosophical, mathematic and natural sciences faculty. These are the basic units of organization for the University of Greifswald. The Theological Faculty, being the first in the faculty hierarchy as it was the first faculty developed when the university was established in 1456. One notable theologian who studied here is Martin Luther’s close friend, Johannes Bugenhagen.

The Law and Economics Faculty has just re-openend in 1991. The Medical Faculty is one of the best-ranked in Germany. Admission requirements in this faculty are amongst the highest in Germany. This faculty concentrates on the field of medicine and dentistry. Arts, Cultural and Social Sciences are the main focus of Philosophical Faculty. Courses such as physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, geology and the likes are offered in the Mathematics and Natural Science Faculty.

A number of notable people have studied in University of Greifswald these include Nobel prize winners, politicians, writers. Examples include Johannes Stark, who received a Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the Doppler effect in canal rays; Gerhard Domagk, who received a Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of antibacterial effect of protonsil; Ernst Moritz Arndt, a former student, faculty member, writer and a poet; The chancellors of the old German Empire, Otto von Bismarck and Bernhard von Bulow have both studied at this university.
