University of Jyväskylä Information

The University of Jyväskylä (Jyväskylän yliopisto) is a Finnish public university known for its active international relations and its close association with local businesses.

It is one of Finland’s top-ranked and largest universities. It is divided into three campuses with the main campus located at the city center with the two other campuses, called Ylistönrinne and Mattilanniemi, located on Lake Jyväsjärvi’s opposite shores.

The University of Jyväskylä traces its origins to the famous Teacher Seminary, Finland’s first Finnish-speaking teacher training college. The Teacher Seminary was renamed Jyväskylä College of Education in 1934, which the university recognizes as its founding year. It was authorized to give out Master’s degrees in 1944, the same year when doctoral dissertation was allowed. The Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural science were founded in 1958 and 1965, respectively. With the expansion of the College, it was awarded university status in 1966. The two newest Faculties, Faculty of Information Technology and School of Business and Economics, were founded in 1998. In 2003, the university was designated as a University of Excellence in Adult Education by the Ministry of Education.

Other good Finnish universities include the University of Turku, Aalto University and the University of Oulu. Similarly ranked universities include the University of Lisbon, Tokushima University, University of Pavia and the University of Bremen.

The University of Jyväskylä offers a diverse range of Bachelor’s and Master’s courses, most of which are offered in English and many are unique to the University. There are more than 120 subject areas spread among the seven Faculties: Faculty of Education, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Science, Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, Faculty of Information Technology, Faculty of Humanities and School of Business and Economics.

All the faculties at Jyväskylä actively engage in research and are affiliated with research centers. Some of the Centres of Excellence in Research as recognized by the Academy of Finland include Evolutionary Research, Political Thought and Conceptual Changed, Learning and Motivation Research and Nuclear and Accelerator-based Physics.

Being a research-oriented university, the University of Jyväskylä has produced a number of well-known researchers, especially in Physics because of its top-notch facilities that include a cyclotron particle accelerator. In other fields, the University is known for producing key members of the choir “Seminaarinmäen mieslaulajat,” which has toured several countries and has produced numerous records.
